2011-10-26 Ron Maggard Update

October 26, 2011

This is the latest update from my friend Ron Maggard concerning the work in Haiti…

I never cease to marvel at God’s grace to the least worthy and I never have to search beyond myself to find where He is bestowing His grace. I am thankful to see God work inHaiti my own life and what a blessing to see God working in the lives of the Haitian people! Last week we launched a church in a new area of Haiti, Delmas 33. We are purchasing land in this densely populated area of Port au Prince and held our first services, a week long evangelistic crusade, on the property recently. This land is very accessible to the community. The first night of the meeting I looked across into the large tent community that is beside the property and saw many people who were listening to our service. Some came and told the pastor that they had been hoping a church would come to their area.

During the time of the opening of the work in this area and our first week of meetings some 16 people trusted Christ as Savior. At the end of the week we had the opportunity to baptize five. Much work went into this launch and we thank God for those who were involved. Several churches sent special offerings to help us meet our payment deadline. During the week I met with the church leaders and we talked about how we were facing a hard time because of the October deadline for the payment. These believers, some of the poorest in the world, opened their pockets to give all they had. Finally with just a few days to go some wonderful friends contacted me to see if we had reached the goal and they willingly made a substantial offering that put us over the top for our need. Yesterday the payment was made to the lawyer for the land. Praise the Lord!

As I said, I never cease to be amazed at the workings of God in our lives and ministries. I love working where God is working. Thank you for your prayers and a special thank you to those who faithfully help us reach the lost at whatever cost.

We will be showing the newest film from Bob Jones University, Milltown Pride, Friday, October 28th at 7pm. There is no charge. A few things today. First, I was able to finish off the nursery, including cutting the door in half and adding a cover over the trundle with the drawers. It’s still pretty barren, but it’ll get more contents over time. The important part is it’s functional. We had a meeting last week of all the ladies interested in serving in the nursery. There were 8 adult ladies and one young person. That was a blessing. Today we had our annual church picnic. Not sure of the attendance, but we had quite a lot of people, including MANY kids. We also had 3 first-time visitors. All of them were visitors of visitors! So, it’s good to see the folks getting more settled in and more involved. The ones they invited were their neighbors, so that’s a blessing. There are lots of photos below of the days events. And, finally, a medical update. Melissa had her MRI this week, but we are still awaiting results. It could be as late as next month before we know more. I also made an unexpected trip to the doctor yesterday for a problem I was having and his diagnosis is a probably kidney stone. He thinks it’s small, so just an antibiotic for the infection and lots of water. At least I’m not having pain, just some other side effects. Will let you know if that gets worse!

Not a lot to report, but a couple of medical updates. First, Melissa. The results of her MRI were favorable, showing a lump that does not appear to be cancerous. However, the doctor has decided to go ahead and schedule Melissa to meet with a surgeon as a second opinion and also to see if perhaps they should do a biopsy. That meeting won’t take place until early next month, so more waiting. Second, Me. I went to the doctor on Friday and he thinks I have either a urinary tract infection or a small kidney stone. He’s treating with a strong antibiotic. So far, no change. No pain, really, but some other “nuisances” that are really disrupting my ability to get anything done. I’ve still got another 6 days on the medicine, and the doctor just wants to wait. So, quite possibly a few more days of annoying symptoms as well as side effects from the medicine. If things don’t change then the next step is an MRI for me. The hospital loves us here! Otherwise, things are good here!

Finished the office today. Did the mud/tape yesterday, primed last night around midnight and finished the final coats of paint around 7am this morning. Around 10:30 we had 8 folks from the church show up to help move everything. We finished the bulk of it in about 2 hours and then spent another hour on final cleanups and such. They did an amazing job and it was good to see so many turn out to help. God has given us a good group of people here. Photos below. Not pictured are the bookcases in the office, which are to the left as you enter.

This song was written by Horatius Bonar in 1861.

Well, it’s been a while so we have a couple of updates for you today. First, about Melissa. They finally scheduled the MRI for October 4th. So, we’ve still got a while until we know more. Second, the church voted on September 14th to use some funds to build me a new office. I currently have an 11′ x 14′ office in the building with the Sunday School classroom. My new office will be 8′ x 11′ and is attached to the sanctuary. It’s smaller, but it’s sufficient. My current office will then be transformed into a nursery, solving our space problem, for the time being. Construction began on Tuesday and is going well. Today I’m starting the tape/mud process and the plan is to have the room completely done (including paint) by tomorrow. The most exciting part of the project is that this is the first project undertaken by the church that is not being completely using funds from supporting churches. The folks here are covering 100% of the cost. It’s a blessing to continue watching them grow. And, finally, this past Sunday we had two new visitors to church. They received some of our information during visitation and decided to come visit us. Looking forward to seeing them again!
