Have you ever pictured what will happen after you die? A common idea that many people have is that they will stand before God and He will weigh their good deeds against their bad deeds to determine their eternal destiny.

As long as there are more good deeds than sins, most people feel they will pass the judgment and be admitted into heaven. But is that really how God’s balance works?

What’s wrong with this picture? Absolutely nothing, as far as God is concerned. You see, the popular idea that good deeds balance out sins is entirely wrong.

Even if you pile up many, many good deeds for every sin, God will still tell you, “Thou art weighed in the balances, and art found wanting” (Daniel 5:27). God is completely holy and cannot allow any sin to enter heaven. This is a great problem, since we “all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). Yes, just one sin can keep you out of heaven!

There is only one way to outweigh your sins. “The blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanseth us from all sin” (1 John 1:7). God loves you so much that He has made a way for your sins to be taken care of. “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). The only way you will pass God’s test is if you have confessed your sins now and trusted Jesus Christ as your Saviour.

This leaves just one question:

How Will You Balance?

We have seen how we cannot make ourselves balance through our own effort. However, Jesus did all the work required for our salvation when He died on the cross and rose again. Only by trusting Him can our heavy load of sin be taken away, making us fit for Heaven.

“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through Him might be saved. He that believeth on Him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the Name of the only begotten Son of God” (John 3:16-18).

“God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with Him. And we are witnesses of all things which He did both in the land of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom they slew and hanged on a tree: Him God raised up the third day, and shewed him openly; Not to all the people, but unto witnesses chosen before of God, even to us, who did eat and drink with Him after He rose from the dead. And He commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is He which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead. To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins” (Acts 10:38-43).

“If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation” (Romans 10:9-10).
